Dear Jim Haley, Director of Community Marketing:
Breakers in the summer at Newport Beach have become a tradition with our family. We have been entertained in our backyard with a small venue of big tennis! Last night was no exception as we were fortunate to be witness to the glory days of tennis that returned with one of our favorite bad boys, John McEnroe! The sentence, "We get old" hit home as I flashed back on the 'good old days' of the Bermuda Triangle of tennis: Borg, Connors and McEnroe delighted us more than 20 years ago. Never was a rivalry so strong before or since those days on the courts! OK, with one exception, Billie Jean and Bobby Riggs.
So last night I was awestruck. McEnroe and Billie Jean. It doesn't get too much better than that!
I want you to convey to Ms. King how appreciative we are for what she has done for tennis locally here in the OC. I wish I could have told her myself. World Team Tennis is alive and well here in Newport Beach. It engages young people in the game giving them inspiration and dreams; if offers the community avenue to rally around a great sport; and it gives locals a chance to see great tennis.
Year after year we will continue to turn to show support for our favorite RAMON DELGADO. He is colorful, strong and demanding. Let him know that even though we don't carry colorful alphabet coded flowers, we are out they cheering him on with each powerful serve!
The Club is doing a wonderful job with crowds, booths and other opportunities to participate and enjoy the event including the music and the "what time is it chant" -even if $9.00 is pricey for a small glass of wine and food options are limited...
Finally, if I were able to speak to John McEnroe I would tell him are grateful we are for his time here in the OC. He has fire, he is a hero and living legend to many of us and we saw first hand how generous he is of his time to the fans. That is amazing and appreciated. (even if I didn't get his or Billie Jean's autograph!).
Thanks for another job well done!
Charlene, I cannot thank you enough for sending such a beautifully written letter and positive message to all of us involved with World TeamTennis. I am sending your email to Billie Jean, Ilana Kloss, and David Egdes from the WTT Office; Terri Delong at the Palisades, and Co-General Managers of the Breakers, Jenna Silverman and Scott Gwartz. Sincerely, Jim Haley Director of Community Marketing Newport Beach Breakers
