What is my task in this Christian Christmas world? As a child of God and a sister of Jesus, I ponder this from a most unusual place on Christmas Eve. The answer is clear: my task is reconciliation. The divisions among people - in my family, my community, my city, the divisions are clear and present. I see these divisions as tragic reflections of separation from God. The truth that all people belong together as members of one family under God is seldom visible. It is rarely more evident than in the church this evening and in this home. My sacred task is to reveal that truth in the reality of everyday life.
Why is that MY task? Simply stated, because God sent Christ to reconcile us with God and to give us the task of reconciling people with one another. As people reconcile with God through Christ we have been given the ministry of reconciliation" ( 2 Corinthians 5:18). So whatever "we" do, whatever I am doing this Christmas Eve... the main question is, Does it lead to reconciliation among people?
