Countdown to CHRISTmas

 November 27, 2005

The words of the Prophet Isaiah will echo throughout the season of Advent which begins today, four weeks prior to Christmas. Advent is the true countdown to Christmas. These are the long days and dark nights of anticipation. We long for consolation; we wait with hope in our hearts.

Gather round the Advent Wreath tonight and light one candle and pray: For unto us a child is born…Isaiah 9:6

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus take time to remember all of the children who are born to us somewhere in the world every day who suffer from poverty and hunger. These are our brothers and sisters; the least among us, whom Jesus taught us to love.

Gather round the Advent Wreath tonight and sing “Oh come, oh come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel” and light the first purple candle.

Emmanuel, we wait in joyful hope to celebrate your presence among us. Help us to be a light of hope in the darkness. Help us to stand with those who live in poverty, to lift their voices and to proclaim their dignity. Amen.
