OC 4 Obama 08… It’s that time of the year again when some head to the beach, some the slopes, others off to the island or family cruises. While more than 20,000 students and teachers “celebrate” Newport Mesa’s unique week-long holiday, President’s week, my husband, son and I spent the day with thousands of interested, inquiring supporters of Senator Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign rally in the heart of Los Angeles’ Crenshaw district. Clearly, this event was an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime moment for us.
We arrived a couple of hours early to secure our place in the crowd just several feet away from the stage that transformed the Rancho Cienega Sports Complex at the corner of La Brea and Rodeo Road into a site for a presidential hopeful to spread hope. For nearly two hours we waited and talked with people from all walks of life (teachers, government employees, college students and elderly. Certainly the three of us were a minority-looking family in this crowd! How inspiring it was to be part of a moment and movement that is generating such interest among Democrats. Nearly 21 months before the presidential election! 46 year old, Hawaiian born, Barack Obama, may be a “junior” senator, but he continues to prove that there are Americans who want a clean slate, a fresh start, and a visionary leader.
Hearing Senator Obama speak was refreshing and encouraging. He offers hope for those of us who want to bridge the partisan gap; he offers hope for those of us who want an America that will stand tall and strong on foreign matters; he offers hope for Americans who want to see an end to the war in Iraq; he offers hope to children who we must equip to shape an America of tomorrow; he offers hope to those of us who embrace strong communities and families!
